National pledges support for sustainable fisheries and growing aquaculture

National will encourage investment in New Zealand’s world-leading fisheries and the marine farming sector to boost economic growth, Fisheries and Aquaculture spokesman Phil Heatley said today.

“Our fisheries and aquaculture industries are increasingly important parts of New Zealand’s exports,” says Mr Heatley. “We’ve freed aquaculture of cumbersome red tape and we’re helping Kiwi businesses to thrive on the strength of their innovation – that’s why National has an ambitious goal of helping aquaculture become a $1 billion industry by 2025.

“New Zealand already has a great reputation as a source of high-quality seafood for our own recreational fishers, as well as the domestic and international marketplace. National will ensure our fishing industry is well-supported so it can step up and take advantage of the opportunities afforded by world-wide demand for best-quality, sustainably-caught seafood.

Building better housing under National

National will continue to build better housing and more effectively manage the State housing stock, National Party Housing Spokesman Phil Heatley says.

"Over the past three years, National has increased the overall State housing portfolio by more than 1000 homes and completed upgrades to tens of thousands of other homes, including insulation, clean heating and essential maintenance," says Mr Heatley.

From the forecourt of Parliament, Phil says the campaign sees him getting back to the electorate a lot more frequently and goes on to talk about some of what he's been doing since his last video update in Whangarei. He talks about how important the newly opened Kamo Bypass is to the region and notes that it would not have happened under another Government.

More than 5700 warmer, drier homes in Northland

MP Phil Heatley, National MP for Whangarei, is pleased with the increase in the number of the regions homes benefiting from the Warm Up New Zealand: Heat Smart scheme.

“In August alone, more than 306 homes were retrofitted here Northland with good quality insulation and clean heating,” Mr Heatley says.

“Even here in the winterless north it can get pretty cold, with snow seen in Whangarei in August for the first time in many years. I know the difference good insulation and heating can make to your health when the temperature drops and the air gets damp.

Whangarei Infrastructure

Personally, I have been delighted with what our town and region has done in terms of hosting Rugby World Cup teams, matches and, most importantly, the associated tourists. Whangarei has very much outgrown the stigma of gangs and drugs, unemployment, union strikes and depression that I remember in the 70’s and 80’s. It’s been a place to be proud of. Yes, of course we still have significant challenges, but we should be upbeat about how far we have come from those days.

Conservation Week (Report)

As I write this, New Zealand is in the midst of celebrating Conservation Week. We are blessed with spectacular landscapes, an abundance of wildlife - particularly our native birds - and a marine environment which keeps many of us fishing and in involved in various coastal activities. We need to protect and preserve these environmental treasures for the future.

As we celebrate Conservation Week, we have a lot to be proud of. The past month saw some great achievements in conservation.

Drunk teens big time-wasters

Recently, I went out with our local “Police on the beat” over the Saturday night shift, 10pm to 6am Sunday morning. I do this on occasion to keep tabs on what they have to deal with and to get a better feel for what I’d otherwise just read in the papers.

Giving Our Youth Hope

The recent riots in England have been attributed in large part to the problems lived by young people; without jobs, without futures, without hope. We don’t see the riots here in New Zealand which is great. But when I go out on Whangarei streets with Police at night I still see far too many drunk teens. If they were tired from a weeks work or from a commitment to sports they wouldn’t be causing trouble.

Ngunguru Spit preserved for Northlanders

Local MP for Whangarei Phil Heatley has today confirmed the Department of Conservation (DOC) has acquired the Ngunguru Spit, a move that will see the local beauty spot preserved for the future enjoyment of local people.

“The future of the Spit has been the subject of great concern amongst locals for a number of years, with many people worried that development would spoil a great natural resource,” says Mr Heatley.

Young Drivers Safety (Report)

The minimum driving age is now up, and the alcohol they can consume before they drive is down…… to zero!

Too many young Northlanders die on our roads, in fact young New Zealanders are seriously over-represented in our crash statistics and in our road toll. 15 to 19 year olds make up almost 7.5 per cent of New Zealand’s population and 6 per cent of all licensed drivers, but in 2010 they were involved in around 17 per cent of all serious injury crashes. Last year alone, crashes where young drivers were at fault resulted in 60 deaths and 385 serious injuries.

In his Fisheries portfolio, he's been working on marine farming issues that stand to have a big impact on Northland.

Oral Health update

The first step was ensuring the new Government realised we needed significant investment in Northland to improve the situation. From that, the Ministers of Health and Finance announced funding of $4.9 million to upgrade child and adolescent oral health services in Northland. That funding has been used to build new community dental facilities, upgrade others, to buy further mobile dental clinics, and to fund the employment of extra dentists and dental assistants. This has all been under the radar…. but NDHB staff should be praised for it.
